referred pain is discomfort from viscera misinterpreted as coming from skin or other superficial structures. ex. heart attack - pain radiating along departed shoulder and medial arm.
pain fibers from the heart and skin fibers converge on matching interneurons in the spinal region. Brain "assumes" the signals are coming from the skin when it's really from the heart.
necessarily, since the fibers converge on the same interneurons your brain interprets the cramp as coming from somewhere where no tissue wrong is actually occuring.
"Referred pain" is where on earth you feel dull pain in one bit of your body, but the problem is really in another module. Usually because a nerve is individual irritated, or because something is swelling up and pressing on something else.
For example, I had an earache for going on for a month, and the doctor didn't find anything, but then the dentist told me my prudence tooth was infected. Once that be out, no more earache.
